What’s the point of a cycling cap? Why wear a gapette? People ask me this all the time…
Or they tell me, ‘Okay, but I’m already wearing a helmet’… or ‘It doesn’t really suit me’.
But if the cycling cap, an iconic cycling accessory, has been around since 1888 and so many people have worn it (with or without a helmet), there’s got to be a reason… or several reasons.
And instead of pulling these reasons out of my hat (or my gapette – haha?), I asked my community on Instagram @veracycling, ‘Why do you wear a cycling cap?’ And some answers came up again and again. »
Whether it’s for style or practical reasons, here are your 10 good reasons to wear a cycling cap! 🚴♂️🧢🌞
1. A must have for comfort
Quick question… Would you wear shoes without socks?
Well, wearing a helmet without a cycling cap… it’s the same thing!
→ It stops the helmet from slipping on silky hair and prevents it from pulling hair when you take it off.
→ It keeps the inside of the helmet clean from hair oils or sweat.
→ And for those with a shiny scalp, it helps prevent the helmet from sticking to the skin on a too-slick head.
2. For better visibility
Perfect for those with glasses!
→ The small short visor keeps your glasses clean, protecting them from drizzle and other annoyances that would normally need windshield wipers.
3. You can cycle in any weather 🌞
The cycling cap keeps us cool in the summer while protecting us from sunburn, and warm in the winter while shielding us from rain (✌️ shoutout to the chapkapette with its cozy fleece-lined ears). Plus, no freezing wind on your forehead. How great is that!
4. No to sweat ! 💦
Thanks to its cotton band around the forehead and all around the head, the cycling cap absorbs sweat, unlike the helmet, preventing sweat from dripping into your eyes.
→ Plus, a cap is way easier to wash than the helmet’s foam padding – no need to unstrap and restrap… basically, it’s all benefits!

5. Keep the bugs out witha bike cap! 🐝
The cycling cap is a great protection to keep our ‘tiny friends’ the bugs out of our hair during the ride… they can roam wherever they want, but not on our heads! However, if you smile too much, the cap won’t stop them from ending up in your teeth…
6. Keep your hair steady with a cycling cap!
No more helmet marks on your hair or forehead.
When you take off your helmet, you keep the cycling cap on, and it helps you stay looking fresh and styled in all situations!
→ It’s our ally whether it’s to keep our bangs in place or hide that little receding hairline (you know what I mean)!

The cycling cap makes you look great! Yes, really!
Let’s face it, a helmet alone doesn’t do you any favors, it gives you that egghead look…

Since it’s trendy, you can even wear it daily and for other sports activities.
